The Big Dig on Market Street
THE BIG DIG ON MARKET STREET. The Howard Avenue-Market Street construction project shifted south last week with most of the initial paving and concrete work on Howard Avenue nearing completion. Crews began excavating asphalt and concrete from Market Street north of U.S. 36 to Howard Street/Avenue. The drive-up window at Old National Bank remains open and accessible from Jefferson Street, although it cannot be called a “drive-thru” for now. Traffic in and out of the Post Office lot is also more treacherous as the one-way has become a two-way out of necessity. The preliminary look of Howard Avenue shows promise that the long-awaited project will be worth the wait, as motorists have come to appreciate how valuable of a thoroughfare Howard Avenue really is to local transportation.
