WRC Wrap Up
Three teams now top the Wabash River Conference rankings as Fountain Central took the week off from league play and left Parke Heritage, Attica and North Vermillion at 2-0.
The Mustangs (3-0 and 1-0) beat Eastern Hancock 32-21 Friday night, while Attica (3-0 and 2-0) blanked neighbor Seeger (1-2 and 0-2) 37-0 for their second WRC win. Parke Heritage (2-1 and 2-0) suffered their first loss Friday to non-conference North Central, 62-32.
The Falcons (3-0 and 2-0) took an overnight halftime break in their game against arch rival Covington (0-3 and 0-3). They led the Trojans 15-14 at halftime when the game was called due to lightning and storms moving through the area. To complicate matters, a concrete bridge leading out of town to the Trojan Sports Complex collapsed last week, forcing fans to travel several extra miles to get to the game.
Covington took the second half kick-off at 2 p.m. Saturday. Fumbles, interceptions and punts plagued the teams before the Falcons went ahead 22-14 on a touchdown run by Christian Myers. Covington would score on a passing touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull within two, 22-20, then converted the two-point play to knot the score. The Falcons appeared to be marching towards the end zone again when the Trojans picked off a sideline pass and regular play ended with a 22-all tie.
The Falcons went four-and-out in the first overtime, and Covington’s touchdown run failed when the ball broke loose on the tackle. Covington had the ball first in the second overtime and sent Tanner Dreher on to kick a field goal for a 25-22 lead. North Vermillion responded on their second overtime possession with a run by quarterback Brennan Ellis, who found a hole that let him reach the end zone for the 28-25 win.
In the other WRC game Friday night, South Vermillion (2-1 and 2-1) blanked Riverton Parke (0-3 and 0-3) 28-0. No other game details were available.
This week’s polls show Fountain Central at #4 in the AP poll and #6 in the coaches’ poll; Attica places 11th in the AP listing and 15th in the coaches’ vote; Parke Heritage drops to 13th in AP poll; and North Vermillion comes in 20th in the AP poll and 16th in the coaches’ ballot.
This week’s action has Parke Heritage at Attica; Riverton Parke at Seeger; Covington at Fountain Central; North Vermillion at Linton; and South Vermillion at Marshall, Illinois with a 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time start.
