Lyford “Y”
Lyford “Y” To Close For Good Saturday; Open Monday As A “T”
Finding a new way to Terre Haute may have been an adventure for some in Parke County this week. The intersection with State Road 163 at Lyford has been closed to all north- and south-bound traffic on U.S. 41 since late last week. The only traffic flowing through the famous “Lyford Y” has been to-andfrom Clinton on 163 to southbound U.S. 41. No traffic has been able to go north on, or come south on U.S. 41.
This Saturday, the inconvenience will extend to those living in Clinton and Lyford wishing to visit the other. No traffic will be able to go through the intersection as workers from White Construction complete the transformation from a “Y” to a “T.” The intersection will reopen next Monday, August 27 as a “T” with the temporary traffic signals still operating.
Once opened, there will be no detours and all turning movements will be allowed. Final grade and landscaping work will be completed at the intersection before the traffic signals are removed. Once gone, traffic at the “T” will be an all-way stop. A short left turn lane will be included on the northbound U.S. 41 approach to the intersection. The project is scheduled for full completion by the end of September.
The two-part, $1.49 million project also includes a small structure replacement on U.S. 36 1.72 miles west of U.S. 41 that will be completed next year.
